Reading and Phonics

FFT – Success for All Phonics

At Lapage Primary School, through daily, systematic and consistent high-quality phonics teaching, children learn to blend and segment words for reading and spelling. To allow our children to develop a strong phonic awareness and effective blending, decoding and comprehension skills, we have chosen to use a DfE validated synthetic phonics programme called FFT Success for all Phonics.

Reading opens the door to learning. A child who reads a lot and widely will become a good reader. A good reader will be able to read more challenging material. A child who reads challenging material is a child who will learn quickly and effectively. The more a child learns, the more he/she will want to find out. The programme supports our intentions to teach children to read and write independently so that they are able to access a broad and exciting curriculum and flourish as learners throughout their time at Lapage Primary School.

Why do we use FFT – Success for All Phonics?

FFT Success for All Phonics is a complete systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) programme that nurtures a love of reading and writing. It is designed to build a strong foundation in reading, writing, and spelling, encompassing all the skills needed for literacy success. The programme follows the "Letters and Sounds" progression, a widely recognised framework for phonics instruction. It has also been validated by the Department for Education, meaning it meets rigorous criteria for effective phonics instruction.

Who follows the programme?

Children in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 currently follow the programme. They are assessed and are put into groups and given the appropriate phonics reading books to follow. Some children continue the programme in subsequent years through personalised catch up programmes: The Lightning Squad and Reading Quest.

What will my child learn in FFT – Succes for All Phonics?

  • Each day your child will spend time revisiting phonemes and graphemes to ensure they consolidate their learning before new content is introduced through teacher led activities designed to help them orally blend, segment, read words and then sentences.
  • They will also learn the alphabet and how to write letters in upper and lower case before beginning to write simple words and then sentences.
  • Additionally, they will have daily opportunities to apply their learning into reading beautifully written books in a Shared Reader lesson whilst also discussing the text to develop their comprehension skills.

https://parents.fft.org.uk/phonic-and-writing-phrases/- For each of the Grapheme Phoneme Correspondences in Success for All Phonics, we teach children a short alliterative phrase to help them to remember it, e.g. for ‘s’ we have ‘The snake slides and slithers.’ If your child is having difficulty in remembering a GPC, reminding them of the alliterative phrase might help.
